Early Development of Intercultural Communications as Resource for Overcoming Xenophobia: from the Experience of Children’s Clubs at Hotels in the Republic of Turkey

Abstract

The article substantiates the relevance of the prevention of xenophobia and the development of intercultural communications from early childhood. The article describes xenophobia as a special form of social phobia that can consolidate hostility towards representatives of other national or confessional groups. It is proved that the lack of intercultural interactions contributes to the formation of xenophobic attitudes. The activity of children’s leisure clubs on the territory of Turkish hotels is considered as a resource for the formation of constructive experience of intercultural communication, prevention or overcoming xenophobic attitudes. The results of a survey of families with children who have experience of family holidays in hotels in the Republic of Turkey are presented. The survey was conducted from 2018 to 2023. The sample consisted of 345 respondents. 98% of respondents identified a special friendly atmosphere for all children, regardless of their ethnic or religious affiliation, created not only by children’s animators, but also by all hotel employees. 72% of respondents received new intercultural communication skills in joint creative activity with representatives of different national groups. 87% of parents recognized the role of Turkish mini-clubs in shaping the experience of intercultural communication and preventing xenophobic attitudes, including on religious grounds. 99% respect Muslim traditions and educate their children to respect representatives of different ethnic and religious groups. Among the reasons for the formation of xenophobic attitudes, 78% of respondents noted disregard for the cultural traditions of other peoples, hostile attitude with awareness of their own superiority, 45% identified the low cultural level of parents as deficits in upbringing and education, 64% – insufficient experience of interaction with representatives of different national or religious groups. It is proved that an important direction of harmonization of interethnic relations is the formation of the experience of intercultural communication from childhood, the formation of an intercultural co-existence community, contributing to the desire for cooperation and mutual understanding with representatives of other cultures, the development of interest in the study of traditions, customs of other peoples.
